Iwo Jima.....February 1945...a poem by one of our readers...

"February 23,1945"

The grandeur of the sea
Unfolds before their eyes.
Hushed batteries now plea;
Blatant bursting now cries,

Arise now the lank pole
For the strong flag shall wave.
Press onwards the still soul,
High and proud you will save.

The tempests rage under
Though the earth will move then
Plant they the stick over
This bare isle so heathen

The air above hummed din
And the strong flag sang out.
But only then the blue preen
Stretched out before their doubt.

Nay, young brave men down
Below this mountain land,
Saw the thinning bright crown
Beyond the silver sand:

Arise now the lank pole
For the strong flag shall wave
Press onwards the still soul--
The boys who had been brave.

It was a February some 57 years ago that the Army and Marines stormed ashore a volcanic wasteland.  It was the beginning of the battle for the Japanese homeland, and the resistance was even more ferocious than before.  Below are the most popular Google links.  Read on....
